Xcel Energy and the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming have announced a new partnership focused on wildfire preparedness and safety education for Colorado residents. The announcement comes during Fire Prevention Month, as both organizations aim to help communities prepare for wildfire risks.

As part of the partnership, representatives from Xcel Energy will work with Red Cross volunteers to provide wildfire prevention guidance and home safety information. They will also assist families in creating emergency preparedness plans. In situations involving wildfires or Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), the two organizations will work together to supply resources and information to affected community members.

Xcel Energy will serve as the Presenting Sponsor for Home Fire Campaigns and Sound the Alarm events in Colorado. These initiatives are designed to directly engage state residents with strategies on wildfire prevention and steps to take during a PSPS. There will also be a focus on youth preparedness through the “Prepare with Pedro” program, which aims to equip children with lifesaving skills.

Two upcoming Sound the Alarm events are scheduled: one in Pueblo, Colorado on October 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and another in Golden, Colorado on October 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where community members can meet Red Cross and Xcel Energy teams.

For individuals who use powered medical devices or require refrigerated medications, Xcel Energy recommends preparing for potential power outages in advance. Customers who notify Xcel Energy about their medical needs can receive extra notifications about planned PSPS events and may qualify for lower electric rates or protections against disconnection. More information is available by calling 800-895-4999 or visiting https://co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/billing-payment/energy-assistance/medical-exemption-program.

A spokesperson said, “This partnership underscores Xcel Energy and the Red Cross’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety and supporting our communities. By joining forces as trusted community organizations, we are helping Coloradans stay informed, prepared and supported – before, during and after wildfire emergencies and power outages.”
