The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early look at public school spending per student from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The initial figures also include state-level summaries on revenues and expenditures for public school systems during the 2024 fiscal year.

It is important to note that fiscal years differ among school systems, and the survey data have not been adjusted to standardize these periods across districts.

According to the Census Bureau, these preliminary results may be updated before the final version is published. The agency expects to release the complete set of data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.

There is no formal news release accompanying this update; only a tip sheet has been provided by the Census Bureau.
