Two median closures on Colorado Highway 119/Diagonal Highway have been rescheduled as part of ongoing safety and mobility improvements. The closures, originally planned for earlier dates, are now set for October 13 and October 16.
Starting at 9 p.m. on Monday, October 13, the Jay Road median will be closed to all transportation modes until midnight on Friday, October 17. During this period, crews will remove old concrete, complete utility work, pour new sidewalks, perform striping, and install a permanent traffic signal pole. Detours will be provided for both motorists and cyclists.
A separate closure of the Niwot Road median, initially scheduled for October 9, will now occur from 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, through 5:30 a.m. the next day. This closure is necessary for work on electrical traffic systems.
For westbound travelers on Niwot Road, the detour will direct them onto northbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, then to Airport Road and back to southbound CO 119 before returning to Niwot Road. Eastbound travelers will be routed onto southbound CO 119, then to CO 52 and 79th Street before rejoining Niwot Road.
Local access for property owners near the closures will be maintained, and coordination with emergency responders will ensure access in work areas. The schedule may change based on conditions.
Full closures are being used to reduce the overall duration of traffic impacts and enhance safety for both the public and construction crews.
According to projections, vehicular traffic between Boulder and Longmont on Diagonal Highway is expected to rise by 25% by 2040. This anticipated increase could lead to more congestion, delays, emissions, and potentially more crashes.
The ongoing Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Project aims to improve safety throughout the corridor, maximize movement efficiency at intersections, improve transit travel times and ridership, and expand opportunities for bicycle commuting by enhancing connectivity within the bicycle and pedestrian network.
“The project is designed to integrate with other active multimodal projects on the corridor to ensure community members can safely and reliably travel throughout the corridor using their preferred mode(s) of transportation.”
