Lupita Ruybal, a paraprofessional in the South Conejos School District, has served as an Educational Support Personnel member of the Antonito Classroom Teacher Association (ACTA) for 13 years and worked as a paraprofessional for 15 years. As her local’s building representative, she emphasizes the importance of establishing meaningful relationships in a district of about 1,000 people.
Ruybal highlighted ACTA’s role in state education history: “Our union was the first in the state of Colorado to adopt a Master contract…I joined the union to be an advocate for education and to have a voice for the greater good of all.” She described her union as a strong support system and attributed its achievements to collective efforts with other members.
She values her school community and acknowledges her colleagues and students. “I am so proud to be a part of our school community. I would like to give a shout out to my students, and all the great people I work with on a daily basis. I couldn’t do what I love without their support.” Ruybal said that being outgoing helps her engage both current members and potential recruits: “I’m a people person, I love meeting new people. I make it a point to greet everybody, so everyone ends up knowing who I am.”
Ruybal received her UniServ’s Blue Ribbon Apple Support Award through nomination by peers—a recognition she considers significant.
She stressed unity among educators: “We need to keep working together no matter what happens. We are stronger together.”
Born and raised in Antonito, Ruybal attended South Conejos schools herself before earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Her interest in teaching grew after substitute assignments led her into regular classroom roles. Engaging with students is central for Ruybal; she not only assists them during school hours but also attends their extracurricular events whenever possible. “What makes me come to work everyday is my students. One of my hobbies includes attending as many activities of the students’ events as possible. I love supporting the students,” she said.
Outside work commitments, Ruybal spends much of her free time with family.
