Lane closures are scheduled for South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, December 8 through Friday, December 12. The closures will take place between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Crews will be installing signage and completing roadway, traffic signal, and lighting work during this period. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions.

The lane closures are part of the South Academy Boulevard Widening Project, which is managed by El Paso County. This project covers the southern mile and a half of South Academy Boulevard starting at the I-25 interchange, crossing US 85/87, and ending near Milton E. Proby Parkway. The construction aims to widen this section from two lanes to three lanes in each direction to help reduce congestion.

Additional improvements include upgraded drainage systems, new lighting, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, striping enhancements, and bridgework. The project is expected to finish by early 2026.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), a safety assessment was conducted on the corridor to identify safety issues and crash causes. “These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor.” CDOT estimates that over the next two decades these upgrades will lead to fewer deaths, injuries, and crashes across four corridors included in the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP).

The MAMSIP initiative is partially funded by an $18 million BUILD grant from the US Department of Transportation. Its goal is to provide safer mobility along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road while supporting economic stability in the region. CDOT states that “the delivery of these improvements will strengthen and enhance the redundancy of strategic movement between the nationally significant El Paso County military installations of Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, and Schriever Space Force Base.”
