Guide learners to think critically, act responsibly, and engage meaningfully with the world they’re part of.
The Colorado Education Association has announced its September selections for the Read Across America program. The organization encourages students at different grade levels to explore themes of citizenship, media literacy, and labor history through age-appropriate books.
For elementary students, “Some of Us: A Story of Citizenship and the United States” by Rajani LaRocca is recommended. The book explores various paths to citizenship and highlights how people from diverse backgrounds contribute to democracy in the United States.
Middle-grade readers are encouraged to read “True or False? The Science of Perception, Misinformation, and Disinformation” by Jacqueline B. Toner. This selection helps students examine how beliefs form and why misinformation can persist in society.
For young adults, “Shift Happens” by J. Albert Mann is suggested. The book discusses the history of worker actions and examines how the labor movement has influenced American society.
Additional resources for Read Across America are available through compiled materials provided by the Colorado Education Association.
