Major bridge construction on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) I-70 Floyd Hill Project will require two overnight closures of westbound Interstate 70 next week. The closures are necessary for crews to build a temporary framework that will support the upcoming construction of a concrete cast-in-place segmental bridge over live traffic.

The full closures of westbound I-70 will take place between the US 6 (Exit 244) off- and on-ramps near Idaho Springs. The scheduled closure times are from 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, and again from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17.

During these periods, westbound I-70 traffic will merge into one lane and exit at the US 6 (Exit 244) off-ramp before turning left to re-enter westbound I-70 via the on-ramp. Flaggers and uniformed traffic control personnel will be present at the interchange to direct vehicles.

All work is dependent on weather conditions and may be rescheduled if necessary. If inclement weather affects construction, closures could shift to Wednesday, Dec. 17, and Thursday, Dec. 18, during the same overnight hours.

Once completed, the new segmental bridge will carry westbound I-70 in a new alignment designed to improve safety and operations along this section of highway.

As holiday travel increases later in December, CDOT states there will be no planned traffic impacts related to the project on either direction of I-70 from 6 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 20 through 6 a.m., Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project aims to enhance eight miles of the mountain corridor between west of Evergreen and eastern Idaho Springs by adding a third westbound travel lane functioning as an Express Lane to address bottlenecks caused by only two lanes currently available in this area. Other improvements include constructing an additional two-mile frontage road section between Evergreen and Idaho Springs; building an extended eastbound on-ramp for slow-moving vehicles; upgrading interchanges and intersections within project limits; improving sight distance on curves; enhancing the Clear Creek Greenway trail; and creating safer wildlife crossings.

Construction began in July 2023 with plans for I-70’s new alignment to open in 2028 and full project completion expected by 2029.
