Motorists in Aurora are being advised to prepare for a full overnight closure of northbound Interstate 225 at 6th Avenue on October 26 and 27. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), along with its contractor Structures Inc., is working on rehabilitating two bridges on I-225 over 6th and 2nd avenues. The closure will allow crews to apply asphalt to the bridge surfaces, aiming to create smoother pavement.

The project team has coordinated efforts to reduce the duration of the full closure from five nights down to two. According to CDOT, “Detour signage will be posted to guide motorists through the detour route. Motorists should plan for up to a 20-minute delay starting at 9 p.m. when taking the detour.” Local traffic will be directed off northbound I-225 onto westbound 6th Avenue, through a traffic light, and then back onto northbound I-225. Commercial vehicles will use an alternate route via northbound C-470 and eastbound I-70. Southbound I-225 will remain open during this period.

If a full closure is not required on Monday night, double lane closures will occur instead on southbound I-225 at both 2nd and 6th avenues, beginning with one lane closing at 7 p.m., followed by a second lane at 10 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m.

Additional single and double lane closures are planned for northbound I-225 at these locations starting at 7 p.m., also reopening by early morning.

These measures are part of ongoing work aimed at improving bridge conditions along this section of I-225.
