Lane closures and ongoing construction will affect travel on Interstate 25 and South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs during the week of October 5, 2025. The work is part of the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP), which aims to improve safety and mobility along key transportation corridors.

On Tuesday night, October 7, southbound I-25 between South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue will have a left lane closure from 9 p.m. to midnight, followed by a right lane closure from midnight to 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Northbound I-25 in the same area will see a left lane closure on Wednesday night, October 8, from 8 p.m. to midnight, with a right lane closure continuing until 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

Southbound South Academy Boulevard between I-25 and Coventry Drive continues to experience lane reductions for traffic signal and island installations. This alignment is expected to remain through October 5. Afterward, additional lane reductions are scheduled starting Monday, October 6 at 7 a.m., lasting through October 12.

During this period:
– The two left turn lanes for the I-25 southbound on-ramp (MP 135 ramp) will be reduced to one.
– Two thru lanes on southbound South Academy Boulevard will remain open.
– A left lane closure under I-25 will occur for southbound traffic.
– The northbound South Academy Boulevard left turn lane onto the northbound I-25 on-ramp west of the southbound ramps will be closed.

Motorists should expect delays during peak times and are advised to allow extra time for travel, maintain safe distances, and merge early when approaching work zones.

The pedestrian bridge over South Academy Boulevard near Wilshire and Welton remains closed but is scheduled to reopen Monday, October 6 after sidewalk replacement work is completed on its north side. Detours using Wilshire Drive and Welton Drive via Hartford Street or the Fountain Creek Regional Trail are available for cyclists and pedestrians.

A shift moving east- and westbound lanes of South Academy Boulevard between I-25 and Fountain Creek toward the center continues so crews can work on outside lanes; this configuration is anticipated until November 2025. Lane narrowing across the southbound bridge over US Highway 85/87 also remains in effect as bridgework progresses.

All schedules depend on weather conditions.

The widening project along South Academy Boulevard covers about one-and-a-half miles from the I-25 interchange past US Highway 85/87 toward Milton Proby Parkway (CO21). It involves expanding from two lanes to three in each direction as well as upgrades such as improved drainage facilities, lighting, striping, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. El Paso County manages this project with completion expected by early 2026.

A safety assessment conducted by CDOT identified recurring crash causes in these corridors; improvements aim to reduce accidents over the next two decades by addressing infrastructure deficiencies.

According to CDOT’s program information page at https://www.codot.gov/projects/militaryaccesssafetyimprovements , MAMSIP seeks more efficient mobility along Interstate 25 as well as Colorado Highway 94, Charter Oak Ranch Road and South Academy Boulevard—corridors vital for military access in El Paso County including Fort Carson and multiple Space Force bases—and supports economic development in the region through enhanced transportation infrastructure.

The $18 million BUILD grant from the US Department of Transportation partially funds these improvements designed to strengthen strategic movement between military installations.
