This week, Mesa County Valley School District 51 held its quarterly luncheon to honor Students of the Quarter. The event was sponsored by Colorado Mesa University (CMU) and Alpine Bank, who also provided scholarships to the recognized students. The district expressed appreciation for these organizations, describing them as engaged and supportive community partners.
The district also welcomed a new group of participants into its Leadership D51 program. Now in its fourth year, the program is designed to help local leaders learn more about the school district and become informed advocates for its initiatives.
Superintendent Dr. Brian Hill attended several extracurricular events during the week. Among them was the Adapted Soccer Tournament at Fruita Monument High School, where students receiving Special Education services competed outdoors. Katie Hummel from the Adapted PE Department was recognized for her role in organizing the event, along with students and staff who contributed.
Additionally, all D51 marching bands and colorguards performed at the regional competition. The superintendent noted the students’ strong performances and mentioned that results were available for those interested.
A volleyball match between Grand Junction High School (GJHS) and Fruita Monument High School (FMHS) included a moment to honor Molly Ryan, a member of the D51 community currently battling cancer. The event brought together both school communities in support of Ryan, with opportunities available for those wishing to contribute to her care.
“I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and found a little time to rest and recharge,” said Dr. Brian Hill, Superintendent of Mesa County Valley School District 51. “This week we celebrated our Students of the Quarter with their quarterly luncheon. You can read more about it below, but I wanted to shoutout CMU and Alpine Bank one more time for sponsoring this event and for providing scholarships to all of our winners. Thanks for being engaged and supportive community partners with us.”
“Speaking of engaged and supportive community partners, I had the chance to welcome our newest cohort of Leadership D51 members this week. This is our fourth year running this program, and it’s an opportunity for leaders in our community to learn more about the district and become more informed advocates for our work moving forward. Shoutout to all of our cohort members for joining us this year!”
“I was also able to take in some extracurricular activities this week. I was able to watch some of our Adapted Soccer Tournament held at Fruita Monument High School where our students who receive Special Education services had the opportunity to compete in a fun soccer tournament outdoors. Shoutout to Katie Hummel from our Adapted PE Department and all of our students and staff who helped make this event possible.”
“I was also able to catch all of our D51 marching bands and colorguards perform at Regionals! The students did an amazing job, and you can see the results below.”
“And I was able to catch some volleyball action as GJHS took on FMHS last night. Shoutout to the GJHS and FMHS communities for coming together before the game to honor a member of our D51 Family, Molly Ryan, who is battling cancer. It was a great opportunity for our community to come together for a great cause, and you can help donate here if you’d like to support her care.”
