Starting in January 2025, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan will be implemented as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. This plan offers a new way for Medicare beneficiaries to manage their out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs by spreading payments over the calendar year instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy.

The plan is voluntary and does not reduce overall drug costs, but it allows participants to make monthly payments rather than facing large expenses at one time. According to the information provided, “For a certain set of people, it will help to manage their out-of-pocket covered drug costs. This plan is not right for everyone and does not save money for patients, but helps spread out existing costs.” Costs are distributed throughout the year via monthly bills from health or drug plans.

There is no additional cost to participate in this payment option. Beneficiaries who choose this plan will continue to pay any applicable premiums and will receive a bill from their health or drug plan each month instead of paying directly at the pharmacy counter.

“If a person with Medicare determines this program is right for them, please have them contact their plan,” states the release.

The new payment structure aims to provide flexibility for those who may struggle with high upfront medication expenses under Medicare coverage.
