There will be alternating lane closures on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, November 10 through Friday, November 14. The closures will take place between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Crews will be working on roadway, drainage, traffic signal, and utility improvements during this period. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open throughout the work. Drivers are advised to follow posted speed limits, keep safe distances, and watch for flaggers and construction equipment.

On Sunday, November 9, mobile lane closures will occur in both directions on South Academy Boulevard between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., as crews conduct smoothness tests on the asphalt surface. Minor delays are expected.

The schedule for these closures may change depending on weather conditions.

These activities are part of the South Academy Boulevard Widening Project, which is managed by El Paso County. The project covers about one and a half miles of South Academy Boulevard starting at the I-25 interchange, crossing US 85/87, and ending near Milton E. Proby Parkway. The road is being widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction to help reduce congestion. Additional improvements include better drainage systems, lighting upgrades, new striping, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. Completion is expected by early 2026.

A safety assessment conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) found that these transportation improvements should help lower crash rates along the corridor by addressing existing safety issues and infrastructure deficiencies.

The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP), which includes this project as well as others along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road, aims to improve mobility and safety while supporting economic development in the region. Funding for MAMSIP includes an $18 million BUILD grant from the US Department of Transportation. These upgrades are designed to support movement between major military installations in El Paso County such as Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base.
