The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on Mar. 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, who served as kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center for many years. Fones died on March 15 at age 76.
Fones worked at the Winpisinger Center for more than three decades, becoming a familiar presence to both staff and union members through her dedication and sense of humor. Her long tenure included roles as cook, kitchen leadperson, and ultimately kitchen supervisor from 1995 until her retirement in 2013. She was among the first three staffers hired by former IAM International President William W. Winpisinger when the center opened.
Colleagues remember Fones for her positive attitude and ability to create a welcoming environment in the workplace. The union said she “had a way of making even the busiest shifts feel lighter,” with many coworkers becoming lifelong friends during her time at the center.
“Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.”
A lifelong resident of Hollywood, Maryland, Fones was active in community events throughout southern Maryland, including support for local organizations such as the Moose lodge. The union described her as someone who “enlightened many lives with her warmth, humor and love.” Memorial contributions may be made to Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
