IAM Union General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen recently visited the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3). The visit focused on supporting education, organizing efforts, and developing young labor leaders within the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
During their time at W3, Cervantes and Johnsen participated in Organizing I classes offered in both Spanish and English. They also engaged with attendees of the Young Workers Leadership Program. Participants traveled from various parts of North America to attend these sessions aimed at building skills and strengthening their commitment to the IAM.
Dora Cervantes emphasized the significance of providing organizing education in Spanish to ensure all members have access to resources needed for leadership roles. She stated that her visit “amplified the IAM’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, education, and empowering members at every level of the union.”
Richie Johnsen met with organizers and young workers, acknowledging their commitment during a busy time of year. He praised “their dedication and enthusiasm, so close to the holidays.”
Participants in the Young Workers program noted that the presence of union leadership reinforced their sense of belonging within the labor movement. They said it “affirmed that they have a seat at the table.”
