Howard “Howie” Huestis, president of IAM Local 1746, has been recognized for his ongoing commitment to the East Hartford community in Connecticut. Huestis, who leads union members at Pratt and Whitney, emphasized his personal connection to the area. “I grew up in this town. I am dedicated to this town,” said Huestis. “I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of needing donations.”

Under Huestis’s leadership, IAM Local 1746 Women’s Committee members Therese Hervieux and Taylor Salmon have continued their partnership with East Hartford Public Schools to provide thousands of school supplies each year to children in need. The event, which is held annually, is anticipated by many local students and families.

The most recent event was held at East Hartford Green Park, where tables were set up to distribute items such as backpacks, notebooks, rulers, and pencils. The IAM Eastern Territory also contributed supplies for the occasion.

At a recent meeting of the Connecticut State Council, Huestis received an IAM Human Rights Award from IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan and Chief of Staff Lorie Wilson. The award recognized his dedication to organizing and sustaining the backpack rally event for the community.

The annual event has grown over time to include booths from other community partners and sometimes health services, all aimed at supporting families as they prepare for a new school year.
