IAM District 6 members increased their involvement in supporting homeless veterans this year by designating the Des Moines Stand Down as an official District HELPS event. Last year, the group held a backpack drive for Homeless Veterans Stand Down. This year, IAM Locals from across District 6 contributed funds, which were matched by the district for a total of $1,150. Supplies were also donated. According to organizers, $750 is enough to provide 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen members from three IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their tasks included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for hundreds of volunteers working at the site. More than 500 people received services during the event; about half were veterans and half were civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM members worked alongside other volunteers to provide care, meals, and essential services to veterans and their families. The district encourages all IAM districts and locals to consider supporting Homeless Veterans Stand Down events in their own communities and notes that there is always a need for volunteers.
