The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor, KSK, LLC, will pause work for the winter on the I-70 Glenwood Canyon Bridge Joint Improvement Project starting Wednesday, November 26. The project is located in Garfield and Eagle counties.
During the 2025 construction season, crews finished work on five bridge joints in both directions near Exit 129 at the Bair Ranch Rest Area. They also completed one large bridge-joint structure at Exit 123 near the Shoshone Power Plant. These improvements help accommodate roadway expansion and contraction and are intended to provide a smoother surface for drivers.
“The team has made great progress on this section of this critical I-70 Mountain Corridor project ahead of winter,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Maintaining the health and safety of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon is essential not only for travelers, but for Colorado’s economic vitality. This corridor is a backbone for commerce and tourism, and keeping it safe and reliable is fundamental to supporting communities and businesses across the state.”
As part of preparations for winter shutdown:
I-70 will return to its usual configuration with two lanes open in each direction.
No scheduled lane closures are planned during winter months to avoid disruptions to snow removal or maintenance operations.
No construction activity will take place except necessary maintenance.
All surfaces where bridge joints were replaced have been paved.
CDOT has also introduced an online hub focused on the I-70 Mountain Corridor that offers information about winter driving conditions and travel tips. The site combines resources from COtrip.org and the COtrip Planner app into a single location: codot.gov/i70mountain
Work will resume in spring 2026 with plans to replace 18 more bridge joints, complete guardrail upgrades, and conduct asphalt paving from Mile Point 116 near Glenwood Springs to Mile Point 133 in Dotsero. The remaining bridge joint work will focus on areas including Exit 119 at No Name, Exit 122 at Grizzly Creek Rest Area, and Exit 125 at Hanging Lake Trailhead.
Bridge joints connect roadways to bridges so they can expand or contract as vehicles pass over them—helping keep roads safe.
