Strong winds are causing significant disruptions in Boulder County and surrounding foothill areas, with gusts reaching up to 80 miles per hour. As a result, several highways have been closed due to unsafe conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The closures currently affect CO 93 in both directions from 64th Avenue in Arvada to CO 170, CO 72 from CO 7 to Ward Road, US 36 between Boulder and Lyons, and CO 128 from CO 93 to McCaslin Boulevard. Officials warn that additional closures may be necessary if wind conditions worsen. Motorists are advised to check the latest updates on COtrip.org or use the COtrip Planner app before traveling.
Drivers should also be aware that strong winds may lead to traffic signal outages. In such cases, intersections without working signals must be treated as four-way stops.
Authorities highlight that today’s weather increases the risk of rapid wildfire spread in areas most affected by the wind. Proper disposal of cigarette butts and securing trailer chains to prevent sparks is required.
