The City of Grand Junction announced on Apr. 17 a call for artists to submit proposals for public art commissions to decorate transformer boxes at the Community Recreation Center, located at 2836 Recreation Way and currently under construction. The deadline for submissions is May 5, with installation planned for June.

The project aims to highlight the natural beauty of the area and foster community pride through public art. There are four mural projects in total, covering eight transformer boxes of different sizes and shapes. Designs should use neutral earth tones that reflect local landscapes or abstract patterns and must incorporate color palettes provided by the Community Recreation Center.

Artists interested in participating have two months to prepare their proposals. Submissions should include a resume, references, examples of similar previous work, a budget outline, a description of the proposal, and a detailed color sketch. A selection panel made up of representatives from both the City of Grand Junction and its Commission on Arts & Culture will review all entries.

Funding for these murals comes from Grand Junction’s 1% for the Arts Program. This initiative allocates one percent from certain city capital improvement projects specifically toward acquiring and displaying public art.

The Commission on Arts and Culture supports efforts to grow arts opportunities in Grand Junction. Those interested in volunteering with the commission or other city boards can contact cityclerk@gjcity.org or call 970-244-1509.
