The City of Grand Junction, in partnership with the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture, has announced a public art commission for a mural project on the HAWK traffic signal box. Artists interested in participating must submit their proposals by September 21, 2025. The selected artist will be required to complete the mural by October 13, 2025.

According to the city’s announcement, the aim of the project is to celebrate the natural beauty of local landmarks and enhance community pride. Organizers are seeking designs that complement the desert landscape and cover all visible sides as well as the top of the traffic signal box. The location for this artwork is where Phase 2 of Monument Trail crosses Monument Road, about one mile northeast of the east entrance to Colorado National Monument.

Artists applying for this commission should provide a proposal description, design sketches, résumé, budget outline, references, and annotated images showing examples of previous work. A selection panel made up of representatives from both the City of Grand Junction and its Commission on Arts and Culture will review submissions.

“The Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture is dedicated to fostering a climate in which arts and culture can thrive and grow,” according to information provided by organizers. For those interested in volunteering with the commission or other city boards, contact can be made via email at cityclerk@gjcity.org or by calling 970-244-1509.
