The City of Grand Junction has announced the release of sample Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) plans and an upcoming workshop aimed at supporting local homeowners interested in ADU development. The sample ADU plans, which were contributed by Mor Storage, a local builder, will be available on the city’s website starting November 3, 2025. These plans offer various floor layouts and elevations based on existing designs in the community. According to city officials, these resources are intended to help homeowners reduce initial design costs and save time during planning. Homeowners are still required to work with licensed contractors and submit site-specific plans for approval.

A free workshop is scheduled for November 4, 2025, at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required for those wishing to attend. The event will provide participants with guidance through the City’s ADU Toolkit and details about the ADU Production Program. Attendees will also have opportunities to network with builders, contractors, lenders, and participate in a panel Q&A session featuring representatives from the Mesa County Building Department as well as financial institutions.

“The sample plans can provide a valuable head start and can significantly streamline the design phase for homeowners,” according to information provided by city officials.

Grand Junction has been working since 2018 to expand ADU opportunities by updating zoning codes and adopting new housing strategies. In recent years, these efforts have included changes to development regulations and launching incentive programs to encourage more ADUs as part of its housing solutions. The city’s initiatives have been highlighted by organizations such as the Colorado Municipal League in January 2024 and Housing Forward Colorado in July 2025.

In fall 2025, Grand Junction received certification from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs as an ADU Supportive Jurisdiction. This status allows the city to apply for funding through the State’s ADU Grant Program. The application was submitted earlier this month; if successful, funds would support future ADU production programs and incentives beginning in 2026.
