The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce announced on Mar. 18 that agriculture remains a central part of Mesa County’s business community and economy, as the region marks Ag Awareness Week with events and discussions about the sector’s impact.
The Chamber said agriculture is not only part of the area’s history but also a driving force behind economic growth, job creation, and the stability of other industries. The organization emphasized that farms and ranches are capital-intensive businesses supporting supply chains and contributing to regional prosperity.
Recent data from the Western Slope Agriculture Report shows that agriculture supports more than 9,000 jobs across Western Colorado and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in economic output. The report also notes that agriculture provides significant tax revenue for infrastructure and services but faces challenges such as rising costs, environmental pressures, land use issues, succession planning, and sustainability concerns.
The Chamber stated that these challenges affect not just farmers but businesses throughout Mesa County. It encouraged community members to read more about these findings at gjincubator.org/agriwest/.
Ag Awareness Week features events where producers, businesses, educators, policymakers, and residents can engage directly with the agricultural industry. The week will conclude with a screening of “World Without Cows” at Colorado Mesa University’s Asteria Theatre on March 24. More information about event schedules is available at gjincubator.org/ag-awareness-week/.
The Grand Junction Area Chamber said it aims to bring together business leaders and partners to support agriculture’s long-term success. The organization offers resources for those in the sector seeking connections or assistance.
