The City of Grand Junction has announced updates to its annual leaf removal program, which will take place from October 20 through December 11, 2025. The start date has been pushed back by one week in response to resident feedback that previous collections began too early.

The program is available only to single-family residences within city limits. Grand Junction is divided into five areas, each with specific rake-out dates. Residents are required to place leaves at the curb by 7 a.m., 18 inches from the curb, on their designated collection day. Leaves will be picked up within three days of the scheduled date, depending on weather conditions. Only leaves and pine needles are accepted for pick-up.

This free service aims to help residents remove excess leaves and prevent stormwater drains from clogging. According to the city, “The purpose of this program is to eliminate excess leaf build-up along city streets that can cause stormwater drains to clog. Keeping leaves out of storm drains helps prevent flooding and reduces the potential for negative impacts on city water quality.” Collected leaves are transported to the Mesa County Organic Materials Composting facility, where they are converted into compost for gardens and farmland. Each year, more than 10,000 cubic yards of leaves are collected through this initiative.

Residents will receive postcards detailing their area’s rake-out dates and can also consult an online map for information about pick-up zones. There will be no leaf collection on Veteran’s Day (November 11) or during Thanksgiving (November 27-28). For additional questions, residents can contact the city at 970-256-4111.
