Energy Wise Rates offer new ways for customers to manage electricity costs

Most customers are being moved to Energy Wise Rates, a new pricing system that charges different rates for electricity depending on the time of day. This change aims to give customers more control over their bills by allowing them to shift energy use to times when rates are lower.

Previously, customers paid a flat rate for electricity, so the only way to reduce costs was by using less power overall. With Energy Wise Rates, customers can save money by running large appliances outside of peak hours.

The on-peak period is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. All other times, including weekends and most holidays, are considered off-peak. During summer months (June–September), rates are higher due to increased demand. In winter (October–May), rates are lower because demand drops.

There are additional options available for those who want different rate structures:
– Energy Wise Plus adds a “Saver” period from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily with even lower rates.
– Seasonal Fixed Rate offers a consistent price all day but is set higher in summer and lower in winter compared to off-peak Energy Wise Rates.

The utility explains that high demand during weekday evenings increases costs for everyone since they must match power generation with usage spikes. These peaks may require building more infrastructure, leading to long-term cost increases.

Customers can reduce their bills by shifting activities such as laundry or dishwashing outside of peak hours—either earlier in the day or after 9 p.m.—and by using smaller kitchen appliances like microwaves instead of ovens. The utility also encourages setting thermostats efficiently and charging electric vehicles during off-peak periods. A $50 rebate is offered for qualified smart thermostats.

To help manage usage and explore rate options, customers can use online tools like the Energy Wise Appliance Tool and My Rate Tool via their account portal.
