Growth and change are central themes in this December’s Reading Across America book selections, which aim to support lifelong learning among students.
For elementary readers, “The History of We” by Nikkolas Smith explores the beginnings of humanity in early African civilizations and highlights how a shared history connects people. Middle grade students can read “The Doomsday Detectives: How Walter and Luis Alvarez Solved the Mystery of Dinosaur Extinction” by Cindy Jenson-Elliott, which follows scientists Luis and Walter Alvarez as they investigate the cause of dinosaur extinction. Young adult readers are offered “A Dangerous Idea” by Debbie Levy, a book that revisits the events from one hundred years ago when Tennessee lawmakers prohibited teaching evolution in public schools, sparking a national debate about education content and decision-making.
