The University of Colorado Boulder has started construction on a new chemistry and applied mathematics facility, known as the CHAP building. The project is located on the southeast side of the Business School Field along Regent Drive and will cover about 139,000 gross square feet. It will serve as the home for the departments of Chemistry and Applied Mathematics.

The university’s Board of Regents approved funding for the $175.43 million project in 2024. Before work began, the building plans underwent an extensive review process by the University of Colorado’s Design Review Board (DRB). The DRB evaluated the project eight times between May 2023 and April 2025 through both informal workshops and formal design approvals.

The DRB works with campus architects and other professionals to guide design teams, ensuring projects meet planning and design standards. Its responsibilities include reviewing all site development and exterior architectural elements for projects across CU campuses from pre-design through full development.

The board consists of six members: three professional architects, a landscape architect, an expert in sustainable building design, and a senior administrator or faculty member from CU Denver College of Architecture and Planning. All are appointed by the university president based on their professional credentials and experience in best practices related to built environments.

According to university officials, “The board’s involvement in the CHAP building reflects CU’s strong commitment to excellence in design and sustainability, ensuring the new facility contributes positively to the campus’s architectural legacy.”
