The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has announced a stakeholder meeting to discuss proposed rule changes for Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), commonly known as rideshares. The virtual event will take place on Monday, October 27, from 4 PM to 6 PM.

The meeting aims to gather public input on updates to rules regulating rideshare services, with a particular focus on the issue of imposter drivers—individuals posing as licensed operators. Participants will have an opportunity to review and comment on draft revisions of current rideshare regulations. Additional information about the proposed rules is available at the PUC’s Transportation Network Companies (Rideshare) Safety Rulemaking page: https://puc.colorado.gov/tnc-safety-rulemaking.

Rebecca White, Director of the PUC, stated, “Every day, Coloradans and visitors to Colorado use rideshares as a way to get to work, travel and home. This industry has grown and evolved tremendously since the very first companies came to Colorado in 2014, and the PUC wants to ensure that our rules are keeping up. If you have used a rideshare and have ideas about how to improve vehicle, passenger and driver safety, please give us your thoughts at Rideshare Engage. If you are interested in having a voice in rules on imposter drivers, we want to hear that too whether that be through Rideshare Engage or by joining the Oct. 27 meeting.”

In addition to the upcoming meeting, the PUC offers an online tool called Rideshare Engage for members of the public who wish to provide feedback or learn more about safety concerns related to rideshares.

The PUC’s regulatory role includes ensuring that vehicles used by TNCs are properly licensed and insured. Drivers must pass background checks and meet medical certification standards, while vehicles must undergo safety inspections. The PUC does not determine rates or fees for rideshare services. Further details about its responsibilities can be found at https://puc.colorado.gov/tnc.
