Over the past two years, fraudulent text messages targeting toll road and Express Lane users have continued in Colorado and across the United States. These scams involve messages that appear to come from toll services such as Colorado’s ExpressToll, asking recipients to pay alleged outstanding tolls to avoid late fees.

The Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO), which manages Express Lanes within the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), stated that it does not use text messaging to collect payments or personal information. According to CTIO, any request for payment or sensitive details sent by text regarding Colorado tolling is a scam.

“Text recipients could be deceived into giving away sensitive personal information, including credit card numbers. For their own security, Coloradans are advised to avoid clicking on any links or providing personal information if they receive a text message regarding tolling matters similar to the one below,” CTIO said in a statement.

Officials recommend that individuals remain cautious when receiving unsolicited texts related to toll payments and remind residents that legitimate agencies will not ask for payment through these means.
