Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is once again providing free tax preparation services for the 2026 tax season through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The VITA initiative, a national effort managed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), operates locally at CMU with support from accounting faculty, students, community professionals, and certified public accountants. Additional help comes from non-accounting faculty and student volunteers who assist with client intake, evaluation, and translation.

Last year, participation in CMU’s VITA program grew significantly—by 150% compared to the previous year. The average refunds received by taxpayers using the service amounted to thousands of dollars.

The program also serves as a practical training ground for students preparing for careers in accounting and related fields. Students interact directly with clients under professional supervision during tax season.

“I think programs like VITA are very important for everyone involved. It’s a great way for volunteers or students to get hands-on experience working with clients and doing tax returns. It’s also a great resource for the community, as well,” said Alleepra Stutzman, president of the CMU Accounting Club. “Everyone needs their taxes done, so being able to offer a free service and help the community is very rewarding.”

Stutzman highlighted additional benefits for student volunteers: “I volunteered last year for VITA, and we got to help so many people. It is rewarding because we are not only getting a great opportunity to learn, but to be able to give back while we do is priceless,” she said. “It has made me excited for the tax season this year because I know we are going to be able to help so many people.”

All CMU VITA volunteers undergo IRS training and certification. Each return prepared through the program receives a quality review before filing to ensure accuracy and confidentiality.

This year’s VITA services will run through April 11 on the second floor of Dominguez Hall at Colorado Mesa University. For more information or appointments, individuals can call 970-248-1395.
