Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is integrating YuJa Panorama into its Desire2Learn (D2L) Brightspace platform to help faculty create more accessible course content. The new tool will be available in every D2L course starting September 29.

YuJa Panorama supports the university’s commitment to universal design and digital accessibility. It also helps faculty comply with federal and state regulations regarding accessible digital content.

Jennifer Pacheco, Director of Digital Learning and Innovation at CMU, said, “At CMU, we understand that technology and accessibility standards continue to change and evolve. We’re committed to making continual progress. As part of this, one of our digital accessibility goals is that all content posted to D2L is accessible, or that an accessible alternative is provided.”

With Panorama, students can access alternative formats for uploaded course files such as tagged PDFs, audio files in MP3 format, ePub files, and enhanced HTML files. This feature allows students to choose the format that best meets their learning needs.

For instructors, the system provides real-time feedback on document accessibility within D2L. Color-coded indicators show whether a file is accessible or if there are issues needing attention. Instructors receive suggestions for improving materials before they are shared with students.

The Center for Digital Learning and Innovation (CDLI) offers support for faculty making these changes. To encourage adoption of Panorama’s features, CDLI has partnered with other campus departments to offer incentives like parking permits and outdoor gear rental credits for faculty who improve their courses’ accessibility during early October.

“Perfection isn’t the goal, progress is,” Pacheco added. “Together, we’re making strides toward a more inclusive CMU.”

Faculty interested in learning more about YuJa Panorama can schedule consultations with CDLI or visit their office on campus. Upcoming training sessions include virtual vendor-led events on September 29 and 30 as well as a Q&A session with CDLI staff on October 7.
