Crews working for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Hamon Infrastructure have finished installing 3.5 miles of new noise walls along Interstate 70 between Pecos Street and I-76. This work marks the completion of the second phase in a project to upgrade noise barriers along this section of highway.

The first phase, completed in 2022, replaced one mile of noise walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard. The second phase began in March 2024 and involved removing old timber structures and replacing them with concrete panels on both sides of I-70. In addition to the wall upgrades, crews modernized guardrails, installed new concrete barriers, and made landscape improvements.

The project was expected to finish by fall 2026 but was completed nearly a year ahead of schedule.

“Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier,” said Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director of Region 1. “We are proud to deliver this key improvement to residents of our region.”

Although construction is substantially complete, CDOT says that clean-up operations will continue through December. Crews plan to return in spring 2026 for final landscaping efforts but do not expect significant impacts on traffic.

According to CDOT, replacing timber walls with concrete panels is expected to provide better long-term noise reduction for nearby residents and businesses while also improving highway aesthetics. Concrete structures offer greater durability than wood alternatives.
