The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has started resurfacing a six-mile stretch of US 40 from east of Berthoud Falls through Empire to Interstate 70. The project, which began in early September, includes removing old asphalt and replacing it with new pavement ahead of the winter season and increased ski traffic.
Overnight paving operations are scheduled to last for six weeks, starting Tuesday, September 2. During this period, alternating single lane closures will be in place on both eastbound and westbound lanes from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. There will also be intermittent 15-minute traffic holds in each direction while work is underway.
Daytime closures will continue for ongoing electrical, pipe, and guardrail work, also requiring periodic 15-minute traffic holds.
According to CDOT, the improvements on US 40 include not only resurfacing but also installing new drainage systems, cleaning inlets and culverts, and replacing guardrails, signage, and striping. Within the town of Empire specifically, two traffic signals will be replaced; crosswalks and curb ramps will be upgraded for safety; bulb-outs will be constructed; and additional drainage enhancements will be made.
“The upgrades will divert water away from the roadway, which will greatly help to prevent potholes, erosion and other damage. The new pavement will make for a better driving surface,” CDOT stated.
