The U.S. Census Bureau will provide embargoed access to the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates for subscribers starting January 27 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The public release of these statistics is scheduled for January 29.

The ACS delivers detailed data on topics such as language use, education, commuting patterns, employment, housing status, income, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. It remains the primary source for local-level estimates on over 40 subjects.

Embargoed data will be available for various geographic levels including all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan areas, counties, cities and towns (places), census tracts, and block groups.

The embargo period extends from January 27 at 10 a.m. ET until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this time frame, wire services and distribution platforms are not allowed to share news stories or data files before the official end of the embargo. Additional details about these restrictions can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.

After the embargo lifts at 10 a.m. ET on January 29, all ACS data products—including those on data.census.gov and through the API—will become publicly accessible.

Individuals interested in obtaining embargo access can register via the Census Bureau website.
