The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Martin Marietta have announced a winter shutdown for the resurfacing project on US Highway 24 between Florissant and Woodland Park, starting November 20. The pause is due to safety concerns for both workers and drivers during the winter season. Construction activities are set to resume in summer 2026.
Work on this project began in late April, covering US 24 from Mile Point 269.4 in Florissant to MP 281 just west of Woodland Park, as well as Colorado Highway 67 in Woodland Park from MP 76.9 at the US 24/CO 67 intersection to MP 77.5 near Red Feather Lane.
During the current construction season, crews milled old asphalt, resurfaced the roadway, installed new guardrail, and replaced curb and gutter. According to CDOT, “The new asphalt will add approximately 10 years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage.” The project also features installation of a new guardrail standing at 31 inches high: “designed to meet new safety standard requirements making the highway safer for the traveling public.”
When work resumes next summer, final touches will be completed on side streets along with permanent striping. CDOT notes that permanent striping requires warmer temperatures for proper application.
