The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 20 that it will begin a region-wide bridge rehabilitation project in southeast Colorado starting April 27. The construction, conducted with TLM Construction, will take place across Pueblo, Custer, Otero, Las Animas and Huerfano counties and affect several highways including US Highway 50, US 350, Colorado Highway 10, CO 69, CO 96, CO 165 and CO 202.
The project aims to strengthen aging bridges by adding steel sister beams to existing timber girders. This is intended to improve safety for motorists and extend the lifespan of the bridges. The work is scheduled for completion in December.
“The structural reinforcement of the beams will extend the lifespan of each bridge in this rehabilitation project,” said Southeast Region Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “These improvements will ensure the safety of the traveling public for years to come.”
During construction beginning April 27, residents can expect single-lane closures and shoulder closures as well as narrowed lanes with an eleven-foot width restriction. Reduced speeds will be enforced within work zones during daylight hours from Monday through Friday. Schedules may change depending on weather conditions.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions and oversees infrastructure across the state. The department also builds and maintains interstates as well as U.S. and state highways while supporting aviation and transit projects according to its website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to official information.
Broader implications include increased safety measures for travelers using these corridors in southeast Colorado and a longer service life for vital transportation links. Further details about this ongoing project are available via phone or email contacts provided by CDOT.
