Black Hills Energy has announced the recipients of its annual Funds for Firefighters grant program, which supports volunteer fire departments across its service area. The company awarded more than $135,000 in grants to departments in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

The grant program is part of Black Hills Corporation Foundation’s yearly giving campaign. Each year, the foundation selects a focus area; this year’s spotlight is on supporting volunteer firefighters. Since 2001, the foundation has distributed over $8.3 million to more than 500 organizations in eight states.

The Funds for Firefighters grants were available to any fire department within Black Hills Energy’s service territory that includes volunteers. The funds helped purchase protective gear such as coats, boots, helmets and other safety equipment; specialized tools like high-pressure air lifting bags and hydraulic rescue tools; and infrastructure items including radios, hoses, hand tools and lighting equipment.

Small towns often depend on volunteer firefighters not only for emergency response but also for services such as medical assistance, search and rescue operations, fire safety education in schools and public events, and child car seat checks.

Black Hills Energy noted that more than 250 of its employees serve as volunteer firefighters in their communities.

“Safety starts with people — and the courage to serve. Our volunteer firefighters embody that spirit every day, and we’re proud to stand beside them. At Black Hills Energy, we believe that when we invest in those who protect our communities, we’re building a stronger, safer future for everyone,” the company stated.

“We’re honored to give back to the volunteer firefighters in our communities. Together, we’re building safer, stronger and more resilient communities,” according to Black Hills Energy.
