This August, the Read Across America initiative is highlighting books aimed at encouraging students to explore their interests and values through reading.

For elementary students, “Every Monday Mabel” by Jashar Awan tells the story of a young girl who eagerly awaits the weekly arrival of a garbage truck. The book aims to help children connect with everyday experiences.

Middle grade readers are introduced to “Kaya Morgan’s Crowning Achievement” by Jill Tew. The novel follows Kaya, a twelve-year-old Black girl, as she faces bias and exploitation while trying to stay true to herself during a competition for queen at Renaissance Faire camp.

For young adults, “Banned Together” by Ashley Hope Pérez brings together 15 diverse authors and illustrators in an anthology that explores how books can transform lives and empower teens to advocate for the freedom to read.

Additional resources for Read Across America are available online for educators seeking materials related to these themes.
